Tiffins Restaurant at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom

Back in May for Memorial Day weekend, the boyfriend and I decided to go to the Happiest Place on Earth. DISNEY WORLD! As fresh Annual Pass holders, our ‘blackout dates’ started right after Memorial Day weekend, and wanted to get one last visit in before then. It was also our anniversary weekend so it just seemed right.

Like we are ballers on a budget, we picked a cheap hotel nearby Disney Springs (beautiful renovations by the way!) and drove up. Soon after planning the trip, we found out about all the cool happenings starting at Animal Kingdom on this specific weekend. As people who hadn’t been to Animal Kingdom in years, we planned Animal Kingdom as our ‘park of focus’. Here’s the thing, I usually go to Disney World for a long weekend and pick one park that is a must-do-no-matter-what.

We wanted to experience all these new happenings, ESPECIALLY the new restaurant opening…Tiffins. As a true foodie, this was the one thing we couldn’t miss. We made our reservation and really appreciate Disney’s effort and attention to detail in regards to food allergies. The boyfriend has a lactose sensitivity and made sure to note that in our reservation.

The restaurant is on Discovery Island right before the entrance of the former Camp Minnie-Mickey and now future world of Avatar.  The restaurant sign fits right into the scenery of the park, almost blending in too much unless you know what you are looking for. Upon entering, you are encountered with the hostess area and a gorgeous map on the wall behind the table. The whole waiting area is decorated with memorabilia and pictures picked up from the Imagineers’ travels.

The items on display at Tiffins are specifically from travels that helped the Imagineers bring Animal Kingdom to life. Continuing on this theme, the menu items are mostly influenced from African, Indian, and South American cuisine. And long story short, this restaurant delivers!

Experience

Honestly, I felt very lucky to experience the restaurant on opening weekend. As is probably common, there were probably some minor (hopefully none major) issues and complications typical with opening week/weekend. None of which we experienced. Although we are not hard to please people. All the items from the tables to the utensils were barely used and that is a nice experience in itself. We sit in the Grand Gallery and the first item that catches my attention is the beautiful wood poles carved with a different array of animals.

The poles are in the middle of the room and are definitely meant to catch your attention. The hostess mentions the Grand Gallery is the largest of the three galleries (rooms) and it celebrates the animals that make the heart of the park. The other two Galleries are the Safari and Trek. Once we finish our dining, we take a walk around the Safari and Trek galleries and Nomad Loungealso take a peek at the Nomad Lounge bar. I see myself making a pit stop at the Nomad Lounge next time I visit the park.

Menu and Food

Once seated, we receive the leather-bound main menus that permeate the immediate area with that leather smell that I personally really enjoy. The menu delivers with the fusion of African, Indian, and South American and there is no doubt the restaurant is definitely signature Disney dining. I order a Hibiscus Henna just because it is HOT outside and it has Hibiscus. Boyfriend orders water as he doesn’t want to experiment too much on a digestive system that we have yet to figure out what triggers it or not.

The food we select is definitely made of top of the line items. Selecting one of the dairy-free options, the boyfriend goes for the Wagyu Strip Loin and Braised Short Rib and I the Hoisin-glazed Halibut. Both an experience in and of themselves. “Oh my God!” were the first words said by the boyfriend when he tried his perfectly cooked strip loin. I really didn’t say much while I ate because I enjoy my culinary moments!

For dessert, we order the only item that does not include any dairy. We order the Sorbet Tasting and were honestly not that impressed. We both found the sorbets to be too sweet and I just finished it because we had to pay for it. I won’t call it a downside, but it did make me realize how limiting desserts can be when dairy isn’t an option.

Final (and Post-Processing) Thoughts

Animal Kingdom's Tree of Life
Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life

Overall, we had a great time at the restaurant. In true Disney fashion, no item or detail is too much. Something I love about Disney is the work the Imagineers and cast do to take us, the visitor, on a journey. Tiffins does just that starting with the entrance all the way through the culinary journey and the decoration and backstories. It is important to state that this restaurant is part of Disney’s Signature Dining and the prices reflect this. The food is top quality and is worth the price in my opinion. Not only are you paying for top of the line food, you also pay for the experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to come back to Tiffins for a special occasion. I’d LOVE to try the other menu items and just enjoy the experience.
